The main rule is that a permanent residence permit requires 8 years of legal residence in Denmark. But if you meet four supplementary conditions, this period can be reduced to 4 years — a significant shortcut on the way to settled status and later citizenship.
What are the four supplementary requirements?
1. Passed Danish Language Test 3
Instead of the ordinary PD2 requirement, you must pass Danish Language Test 3, which is at a significantly higher level (equivalent to B2 on the CEFR scale).
2. At least 4 years of full-time employment
You must have been in full-time employment for at least 4 of the last 4.5 years — almost continuously. Self-employed persons can also meet the requirement.
3. Income requirement
In each of the last 2 years you must have had a taxable income of at least a fixed level (typically adjusted annually — in 2026 around DKK 290,000-310,000). The income must be documented via annual tax statements.
4. Active citizenship
You must sign a declaration of active citizenship and meet the general expectations of integration in Danish society.
Main requirements still apply
In addition to the 4 supplementary requirements, you must meet the ordinary main requirements:
- 4 years of legal and uninterrupted residence (instead of 8).
- Passed PD3 (instead of PD2).
- No public benefits under the Active Social Policy Act within the last 4 years.
- No public debt.
- No certain criminal offences (conduct requirement).
Which path is right for you?
For many, the 4-year route is attractive because it provides faster access to permanent residence — and thereby shorter time to Danish citizenship. But the supplementary requirements are strict, and especially PD3 and the income requirement stop many.
Assess your specific situation carefully before submitting. If you submit after 4 years but fail to meet the supplementary requirements, you receive a rejection — and can only reapply under the ordinary terms after 8 years.
