If an asylum seeker’s application for asylum has been rejected and all avenues of appeal have been exhausted, he/she must leave Denmark by the date set by the immigration authorities. If the individual does not voluntarily leave Denmark by this date, the police will be asked to facilitate the individual’s departure.
The Immigration Service transfers rejected asylum seekers from an accommodation centre to Transit Centre Avnstrup immediately after the deadline to depart passes.
Transit Centre Avnstrup residents are primarily rejected asylum seekers and the like who are co-operating with immigration authorities on their departure. Rejected asylum seekers are residing at Transit Centre Avnstrup until the police determine whether they will co-operate.
The police are responsible for determining whether a rejected asylum seeker is willing to co-operate on his/her departure. Individuals who co-operate will typically be able to remain at Transit Centre Avnstrup until leaving Denmark. Individuals who do not co-operate will either be detained (if forced deportation is an option) or transferred to a departure centre.
The Danish Red Cross operates and manages Transit Centre Avnstrup and has staff present at all times.
Individuals quartered at Transit Centre Avnstrup who are co-operating on their departure can earn a supplementary allowance, provided if they attend school or job training and help out around the centre, as agreed with the Red Cross.
Meals are served in Transit Centre Avnstrup’s canteen three times a day. Children receive snacks to tide them over between meals.
