The Association Agreement and Turkish citizens
The Association Agreement — also called the Ankara Agreement — gives Turkish citizens and their family members expanded rights in the EU, including Denmark. The standstill clause means Denmark may not impose stricter rules than those in force when the agreement entered into force.
The EU Court of Justice has, in cases such as Demir and Genc, extended the agreement’s reach so Turkish workers, self-employed persons, and their families can sometimes avoid requirements that would otherwise apply under Danish law.
